I thought Dire Straits sounds fantastic on my Sony DVP-NS500V.However, I did observe what you've mentioned with the single-layer stereo version and the hybrid version of Dave Brubeck Quartet's "Time Out". I think the single-layer SACD has a tiny edge in terms of sound quality. The difference is very small though. Certainly you couldn't tell the difference unless you A/B the SACDs.
For the record, the single-layer is the US-made version with the cardboard slipcase and the hybrid version was made in Europe, but purchased in Hong Kong.
