From long & involved email correspondance with David, I know he is driving the traffo straight off the digital section of his SCD-1. These digital chips have *minimal* current drive capability to start with, and then he has (at my suggestion) added series resistors to reduce the loading brought by the transformer because that was causing distortion. And these resistors further decrease the current drive. So this setup is the exact situation that NEEDS a buffer even with lowish capacitace cable - and the BUF chips he uses are the PERFECT thing to use - unless one goes to the bother of making up a similar discrete circuit. Lots of current drive into the cable is a vital requirement to realise the wide bandwith and great sonics of a minimally filtered SACD signal.
And for any SCD-1/SCD-777ES owners with our Upgrades reading this - we are about to make available the sometimes mentioned "S-TACT BE Gone" mod - please email me privately regarding this.
