Coming immediately after the ambient discusions here, I heard some new stuff last week and ordered a couple of discs from Japan.
Here they are within days.
This album is a reworking of Eisl's Awaawa disc by Taylor Deupree with the addition of Christopher Willits on guitar on one track.
On first listening:
It is like being at home with Azure Ray while a gentle hit of some love drug washes through you.
Not so much melodies as ideas of melodies drift by while a breeze blows through the room.
Perfume in the air.
This is quite rarefied.
Probably too much for some people.
I get that, but I don't care!
Ghosts of distant commuter trains return or leave.
Trumpets play single notes. Underwater.
It might be raining outside.
Follow Ups:
Didn't know what 'ambient' music was so I tuned into an 'ambient' Internet radio station tonight (320k feed, sounded good) and I like it. Is 'ambient' AKA 'new age'?

Much "new age' is ambient in style, but much ambient is not new age. There are no clearly defined edges, but I find new age has a more cliche Eastern influence; new age is often not much more than a simplistically arranged pistache of Easern instrumentation over some vague synthetic wash. That said, I like much world music, Eastern included. I can see how folks that have not been brought up on Eno or involved in the early stages of techno probably believe ambient = new age. Personally, I struggle with new age, but am loving the other ambient styles. I have not gone true 'dark ambient' or the more overtly futuristic / industrial / beats-driven (e.g. Aphex Twin and Autechre) styles... I will wait a while before tackling these; I can only $pend so much ;^)I wish I have access to internet radio - I would certainly be listening to more ambient. I feel a little disadvanteged by having to go with written descriptions etc. to guide my ambient sojourn; listening would be more efficient and effecdtive. That said, I am enjoying every single purchase I have to date, so must be doing something right.
I have some more on the way - I will post my thoughts after a listen. That reminds me, I don't think I have posted about all the disks I have been listening to...
Cheers
Yes, I believe I understand what you are saying. So, 'New Age' is a subcategory of 'Ambient', so to speak?

Not only is it a great way to hear new or at least more ambient, but these is 2 hours of it a week put together by someone who knows what they are talking about and also knows a lot of the musicians (Pimmon).
You can listen to that on your computer.

Another 320k feed I found:

Ok, I believe I understand the core meaning of 'Ambient' music. I enjoy it. You definitely have to be in the mood for it.

But, Windows Media Player at 64k? Bummer. I guess I have been spoiled on 320k WinAmp. However, I shall take one for the team and sacrifice resolution to broaden my catalog.![]()
p.s. so far I would categorize this as 'Meditational'. From the first song that is. I shall keep listening and report back later.
I probably don't know what I am talking about ;^) I am still new to this genre, but learning daily.
Cheers
Yes, pretty-much; you put it much more succinctly than I did. Some new age is not ambient tho; I guess they over-lap, with most new age being a sub-category of ambient.I have just added to my previous post - probably while you were posting... it includes a vague description of new age. But these categories are not at all clear-cut and are difficult for me to describe. Hope I make some sense.
Cheers
Hi DaveSounds great! Right in line with what I am liking at the moment. I seem to like spacey music, a little dark or warmish, some (what I believe are referred to as) drones building in the background, possibly vague beats, with genuine - or ethereal hints of - melodies using natural or imagined instrumentation forming from the drone... interweaving with the beats and possibly other strands, fading in and out, unraveling... That said, I am liking all of the ambient I have bought recently. The simple subtlety of Budd still has a special place for me.
I dropped in to Rocking Horse and picked up Stars of the Lid, "And Their Refinement of the Decline". Well, it reminds me of some other stuff I have heard form the Kranky label, mainly Godspeed You! Black Emperor. It is not at all the same, as such, just a similar feel in places. I find it quite sparse being built on a few layers semi-organic-sounding swathes of simple slowly moving waves of sound (drones?), with the occasional brief melody woven through at times. Difficult to describe: not really gentle, occasionally powerful yet not 'dynamic', synthetically subtle. Hmmm, like Eno's ambient with a Kranky feel. Not instantly accessible (like much ambient), but the more I play it the more I like it. Yeah, really beautiful in parts. I will definitely order some more and Ballasted Orchestra is on the way.
I have a few more on the way - including some of your suggestions - and a list of about 20 disks. Should be an interesting few months.
Whilst I enjoy most music played back on almost anything, I think much ambient requires a system capable of nuance and dynamics; ironically, *perhaps* more so than spaciousness and sound-staging. Despite that, I am enjoying it greatly through my sister’s midi system and office desktop PC speakers on no repute.
When I am fully moved back to Brisbane and my system has been resurrected / amended, it would be great to have an ambient get-together. Nice food, nice drink, relaxed company and so forth. Let me know via email if you are interested.
Cheers
P.S. How did Fred and Ginger enjoy the move?
The get together sounds great.
Fred and Ginger are getting used to having a pool to laze around. Ginger, being a resort queen is very at home!
Glad you are enjoying the music so far.
I think Refinement is very cool.
The better the system, the more some of this ambient opens up.
Texture might be one way of putting it.
The new Yasushi Yoshida turned up with the Deupree yesterday but I have only played it on the bedroom system last night and it sounded very good.
I think this guy is tremendous.
It is a bit like the first album but a couple of tracks have a band with a busy drummer, a bit like those Sufjen Stevens discs where it sounds like he has a deconstructed Salvation Army Band playing Zappa's Peaches En Regalia. Well it sounds that way to me...
Where are you living at the moment?
I am currently at my sister's place way out in sticks (Springfield Lakes). Some weekends I am back 'home' in Sydney - a nice little place in Newtown. Great area. At the end of this month, my girlfriend and I will be moving back up to West End, where will will live for six months while we look for a place to buy... now thinking Bardon. I also need to get my system sorted - going SETs and horns, I think.
Yeah, I am really enjoying the music. My sciatica kicked the crap out of me for a while, but this ambient thing has gotten me all enthused again. I am now looking to get out amongst some live music. I think we have tickets to Ladytron next month - should be fun. Must see what else is going on.
Okay, I am tired and have got to get some sleep.
Cheers
... keep me informed!
Sorry about the sciatica.
The property market is in the crapper (I believe that is the correct technical term) for the next year, so take your time and get a good price.
When I say "in the crapper" that is only for selling of course... it's great time to buy!!
Albion and the area around Windsor Park are interesting. A major road was going to go in through that park and the council is slowly selling off the houses they bought up to make way for it.It's not much to look at at the moment but it has a station (good for getting to work) and has the park and the new retail and recreation "hub" will bring a lot of interest to the area. If you look on the map look for Windsor park rather than Windsor.
The houses that actually back on to the park are the good ones.
In my opinion!

Yes, hopefully. A ‘small’ well-evolved design to start; probably something (exactly?) like top-spec 4 Pi speakers, possibly with their wood horn. We will see. My main concern with going the horn route is that historically I have not loved speakers with a crossover point in the middle of the critical range. I am not sure if this is because of the crossover point, crossover design, or tweeter type… probably all three, with the later being the most significant. For me, well-designed horns seem to offer a nice set of compromises. There are other options I may yet consider…Thanx for the property tip; we had thought of Albion, though did not know there was a “Windsor Park” – I will definitely look into that. I guess it would be close-ish to Northey Street Farm, my Sunday morning hippie hang-out – a great way to shop.
Hey, Ginger is looking pretty happy in that shot. Very cute. I'll be in touch to arrange a get-together when we are settled - it is gonna be busy times for me until then.
Cheers
