Hi Dave
Sounds great! Right in line with what I am liking at the moment. I seem to like spacey music, a little dark or warmish, some (what I believe are referred to as) drones building in the background, possibly vague beats, with genuine - or ethereal hints of - melodies using natural or imagined instrumentation forming from the drone... interweaving with the beats and possibly other strands, fading in and out, unraveling... That said, I am liking all of the ambient I have bought recently. The simple subtlety of Budd still has a special place for me.
I dropped in to Rocking Horse and picked up Stars of the Lid, "And Their Refinement of the Decline". Well, it reminds me of some other stuff I have heard form the Kranky label, mainly Godspeed You! Black Emperor. It is not at all the same, as such, just a similar feel in places. I find it quite sparse being built on a few layers semi-organic-sounding swathes of simple building and fading sound (drones?), with the occasional brief melody woven through at times. Difficult to describe: not really gentle, occasionally powerful yet not 'dynamic', synthetically subtle. Hmmm, like Eno's ambient with a Kranky feel. Not instantly accessible (like much ambient), but the more I play it the more I like it. Yeah, really beautiful in parts. I will definitely order some more and Ballasted Orchestra is on the way.
I have a few more on the way - including some of your suggestions - and a list of about 20 disks. Should be an interesting few months.
Whilst I enjoy most music played back on almost anything, I think much ambient requires a system capable of nuance and dynamics; ironically, *perhaps* more so than spaciousness and sound-staging. Despite that, I am enjoying it greatly through my sister’s midi system and office desktop PC speakers on no repute.
When I am fully moved back to Brisbane and my system has been resurrected / amended, it would be great to have an ambient get-together. Nice food, nice drink, relaxed company and so forth. Let me know via email if you are interested.
Cheers
P.S. How did Fred and Ginger enjoy the move?
