You are lucky to have the resources to do a home audition. That along with a trusted dealer were vitally important in the past. However in todays market, 2 channel dealers are few and none in the fly over country. That said, we are almost forced to make a leap of faith.
However, good homework and research can be quite helpful. I have put my present system together by doing good research, ie user and professional reviews and asking questions both here and Agon. So far it has been positive steps up the ladder.
My next step is a preamp, preferably tubed, probably CJ, although the supratek (tubed) and Bent (passive) are quite interesting. Then too, i read your glowing report on the CJ control amp and it looks pretty good too. Interestingly, it looks like a combo of the 2 (passive tubed)if I'm thinking correctly. At some point I'll make that leap of faith on the preamp. I think it comes down to preferences and priorities. Oh..and $$$
