Knowing that you had an all solid-state system, I would have initially suggested you try the SWO-GX, rather than the XXX. The tonal balance of the XXX is sometimes too lean for some ears, and works to emphasis the incisive qualities of (most) solid-state presentations. Additionally, installing a duplex that was pre-conditioned would largely avoid the ups and downs of break-in that you are experiencing.
You also pointed out (in another post) that the revealing nature of the XXX is illuminating the "flaws" of a bad/poor recording. Since the XXX offers a presentation with greater "micro-detail", as I like to call it, you are certainly hearing more information off the recording, both the good and the less-desirable.
