RFI's effects sound like what you describe. As the SWO-XXX appears to be more revealing, it may be revealing that defect in the rest of your system. Read up on RFI controls here. They are cumulative when done properly, so you can try something and if it works add more. I particularly like parallel RFI filerts on my AC, R-C arrays, transformer tweak, etc.
My SWO-XXX does not do what you describe and neither does my Furu Cu.
