Are we talking about the same thing???

Hi.

Your statement is correct only when the filter choke, of very very low DCR & very low inductance (5H being too too large) is placed in series of the powerline as used in every powerline filter. Inductive reactance is a function of the signal frquency for a given inductance of the filter choke.

But we are talking about sonic improvement by choke shunting instead of serieing. Even Hammond's engineering manager (my pal) can't give a straight answer to this question. How can a shunting choke drain away RF noises effectively with its increasing impedance to RF high frequencies ????

We all know powerline filters all sound different. Some powerline filters manufacturers found by shunting a choke improves the sound of a powerline filter (which all come with series low low inductance RF noise filters & bleeding capacitors anyway).

Hence the poster asked why this happens & hence my answer to his post.

Besides, technically you can put any HV DC filter chokes across the AC outlets. The question is, as I already pointed out, would your house underwriters still honour your claim against any damages, fire or what not, for anything not UL/CSA rated for such application which caused the damages ??? Who can predict accidents ???

Play safe, & therefore I recommend a slow-blow fuse upstream of the choke in the SAME shunt circuit. For a 5H choke, get a 1A slow-blow 1A fuse should save the day in case of the choke shorting.
