Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: different names same specifications

Get a tube manual and look up these tube types. The ECC83 is electrically identical to a 12AX7; as others have implied, these are just two different designations for the exact same tube. However, that does NOT mean that all ECC83s and all 12AX7s will sound alike, or even be truly identical electrically (due to slight differences in manufacture, choice of materials, design, and production tolerances). The ECC83/12AX7 might just be the most ubiquitous tube type in the whole world; you have dozens if not hundreds of brands and variants from which to choose. The 5751, OTOH, is a different animal, but it is electrically close enough to a 12AX7/ECC83 that USUALLY one can swap out one for the other with no dire consequences. If the 5751 in your gear is part of a gain stage, then you can expect gain to increase when you sub an ECC83/12AX7 for a 5751, because the former tube type has higher "mu" than does the latter. Apart from that, no one can tell you in advance whether you will like the results (unless there is someone here who has done the exact same swap in the same gear you own).
