I would suggest three new production 12ax7s that you could try that sound good and fall under or right at $25.00. They are, Sovtek 12AX7LPS, Groove Tube 12AX7M and Tung Sol 12AX7. I would start out with the Sovtek as it is the cheapest, and the quietest.I have tried 5751s in circuits that were desinged for 12ax7s and found that I can't predict what the sonic changes will be. I tried them in my line stage and found the sound to be too laid back and lacking in dynamics. But I also tried them in my phono stage, something that most people say is not a good idea, and I got great sounding music but unfortunately unacceptable hum. In both cases the gain level dropped a bit.
Cheers,
Jim
