Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

...possible and greedily devour it, in between dissecting tubes! Today, I am going to start with a used EL84, that being the only used tube I have that is not presently in service; I just can't bring myself to break open the perfectly good N.O.S. 813's I have; PRAYING someone with a no-longer-useful 813 or 845 will let me know. I called that fellow recommended by a number of forum members who is a tube guru and has a great N.O.S. stock, but he told me he didn't possibly have time to go through his junk pile. Being NOT rich, I couldn't offer to pay him to do so, so I had to sadly withdraw from the conversation, but he DID tell me he has used 813's at $35 each, so I'm going to buy one from him and bust that open. I'm going to the bother of doing that because I'm getting ready to build an 813 amp, and would like an experiential understanding of the tube I'm about to build for. Sounds like a ritual worship of an earth-godling, doesn't it? (there's some special ethnological term for earth-gods, but I can't think of it).

actually, any group where members seriously discuss subjects such as whether silver or copper in a speaker cable makes a difference in sound quality has already long ago crossed the line into earth-god worshipping!

thanks for your kind post.
