Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Interesting project

radiance,

It's an intersting idea. As a tehcno-dyslexic, I've thought of a similar project, but on a much smaller scale.

Knowing our fair and helpful inmates, I imagine there will be some donations, but you can also search on Ebay "tubes" and I've seen piles of off-types NOS and used for very little- 40 old TV tubes for $20 etc. With NOS, though they're not useful, you can measure performance and perhaps relate it to materials and construction. Tests to destruction might be fascinating- see last paragraph though.

The thing is the types you mention are the most common- but it depends on poeple keeping the old tubes after a change. I keep them, and if I had access- they're in impossibly deep storage- I'd send you old 12BH7s, 12AT7s, and Philips ECG 6550s- one arced.

One thing- sorry, you probably know this, as far as I know, tubes can contain some nasty elements- when you break a 12AT7 the glass will be coated with what- Barium oxide? Because I don't know the hazards, I would err on the side of caution and be careful in your contact with and disposal of the stuff in there! I'm quite sure I don't want Barium oxide and glass particles in my eyes,... Do you watch "Mythbusters" ? They provide good frameworks to approach this kind of project.

I'm sure the forum would be interested in what you find out.

Cheers,

Bambi B
