Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: Data Points

"Um, because your batch size is small....? May be I'm wrong, but I always assumed that tube dealers had to buy large size batch to get enough good matches out of it.

Actually, I'm curious now. Are you saying you buy 20 unmatched tubes expecting to get 3, 4 or even 5 good matching quads out of it?"

I never said I expected to get ANY matching quads out of it. I determine the final matching myself.

Please read what I posted previously - I've pasted a copy below:

"As I've said before I do buy "pre-matched" tubes in some cases simply so I can get tubes that are (hopefully) relatively close to each other. I NEVER trust anyone else to do the final match on tubes, the factory and/or distributor match is generally lousy."

What that means is I get tubes that are at least in the same neighborhood. It increases the odds of me getting matches, but it doesn't guarantee anything. In some cases I buy large batches and then whatever matches is whatever matches.

"Now, how matching came out for your batch of 20 would be a good data point of internal tolerances too, no?

No. Tubes with internal pieces misaligned can still match - the current KT-90 Ei is a prime example.

"So I somehow assumed 20 is too small of a batch. May be it's different for KT77, I just don't know. I only know from that one admittedly limited experience."

Too small to do what?

I never said ANYTHING about matching in my initial post about the crummy tubes. Whether the tubes matched or not was/is irrelevant.
The only reason it even came up is because you made the seemingly out of the blue observation in your earlier post.
