Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: Email reply from Eurotubes about JJ KT-77 quality issues

"There will be mica particles in quite a few tubes but these things are not new and I have plenty of NIB NOS RCA, Sylvania and a host of other brands that are very crooked in the base and look like snow globes because of all the mica flakes in them. Once again these things do not hurt the performance and it’s noting new."

To clarify, of course I see a few mica flakes in a tube from time to time. A few flakes in an occasional tube is one thing, the tubes I described have significantly more than just a few. They are present in a quantity large enough that if I were the purchaser it would concern me.

For the record, I do NOT see them in any significant quantity in EH, Sovtek, SED, or Chinese tubes. If other new production tubes look like snow globes, I must say I've yet to see them.

The bottles being crooked may not bother someone using them in a guitar amp, but in audio gear with exposed tubes it can be important to the purchaser. As would the chipped edges on the top of the tube base - I didn't even bother to mention that.

As well, that was no rant on my part. It would be in my self interest to NOT make that post, as I could sell more tubes. But I call 'em as I see 'em, since I wouldn't want to receive the KT77 tubes I got if I was a customer.

Let me offer the same advice that I offered on the KT-90 type III situation. If you want to buy them, know what you are buying. I won't be selling them because I consider the quality to be subpar. If you disagree that's fine, buy them and enjoy.
