Re: safest way of biasing an amplifier internally

How much is a ransom?

I had a tech go over a tube power amp I bought and he charged me $140.00. According to him I had to get new tubes and he wanted another two hours work to rebias the amp with the new tubes. I took the amp back home, ordered some new tubes at less than half what the tech quoted me and I attempted to bias the thing myself (spent almost $100. on a multimeter and various tools!) and now the amp is at the local dealer because something went wrong. It's easy enough to do on my amp I guess, but when there is a fly in the ointment you still have to bring the darn thing in, so you get to pay twice. Oh, if you already own the amp and everything was working fine, you at least know what the baseline is, which is not the case when buy one used. You pays your money, and you takes your chances. I'm overdue for a perfect used component any day now!
