Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

You really need to find someone who is familiar with electronics like a Ham Radio enthusiast or another audio DIY builder to guide you through some safety precautions. Maybe a local vocational technical school might be a start. Some amplifiers are auto biasing in that they use "cathode bias" and the tubes manufacture their own bias (as they age they loose this ability). Some amplifiers use "fixed bias" which must be set with a potentiometer. Another crucial thing to understand is that there are lethal voltages present in an exposed chassis especially around the filter electrolytic capacitors. Biasing and attaching the vom leads to the ouput tubes cathode resistors are in a relatively safe area of the circuit and generally you're measuring small voltages (but every amp is unique in how the bias is set and at what voltage). Just never turn the amp on without a load on the outputs. Ray
