Re: Opinion on Von Schweikert VR-4jr's

I auditioned both speakers before purchasing the Gallo 3.1, albeit in different rooms at different times. My demo of choice was Shirley Horn for female vocal, Kevin Mahagany for male vocal, John Scofield for guitar, James Carter selection for tenor sax, but also because the selection contained solo piano, solo bass, and very distorted sax, and then Flotsam and Jetsam, for thrash type metal for those increasingly rare Saturday nights when I need to let off steam.I directly compared the VR-4jr to the Joseph RM25si.

Overall, I preferred the Joseph. Between those two, I felt that the Josephs different from music to music. The VR-jr, in my opinion, sounded the same from music to music. Shirley Horn had the same tonality as Kevin Mahogany, etc. The one area that I felt the VS-4jr to be superior was in the cabinet. I felt the Josephs added a little cabinet resonance to music that the VS-4jr did not. The VR-4jrs did not strike me as a bass heavy speaker, or offer any more bass than did the Josephs, although the Josephs are spec'd to 32 hz. versus the VS-4Jr's 24hz. (I believe)

I went with the Gallos because I felt that they tonally represented instruments better than the others, and because they disappeared much better than the others. I think added bass/warmth is often a contribution of the cabinet. If you like that sound, the Gallos are not for you. The VS4jr has, I believe, a midbass hump that, for me, colors music. YMMV.

I purchased the subamp with the 3.1. Using my trusty Radio Shack meter, I have relatively flat response down to about 25hz. I cannot get flat to 22hz. in my room without increasing the response around 35hz. But I was surprised how little impact it makes. But with the subamp, you can always goose the bass to your satisfaction.

Then I listened to the
