Heya Burntfingers,I like both speakers quite a bit. I think both speakers need a bit of effort/help to get the best quality (and quantity) bass from them. VR needs the lead shot and should be biwired (a single run of biwire cable won't work because of binding post placement issues), while the gallos...well...ahh.. I hope my comments aren't out-of-line with standard Speaker Asylum protocol....?
Anyways...If you're not dead-set on getting rid of your Gallos (immediately) and if you're up for a super quick and easy DIY....nothing permenant either...read-on.
(FYI: I haven't tried this "tweak" personally, I've only read about it)Some have found that adding a 15-Ohm,5-Watt wire wound resistor accross/between the subs' speaker input terminals can increase bass quality and output on the Gallo 3 and 3.1s. That's a total of 2 cheapie resitors, one screwed into the left sub input terminals and one for the right...nothing else.
The 10audio article explains differently/better how to do it (the section of interest is near the photo of the speaker terminals, low left) and the "Asylum" article discusses why it does what it does...
I quote Al Sekela, "In your case, the speaker (Gallo 3) was designed to achieve critical damping with an amp connected to the sub-in inputs. This amp would have a low output impedance and allow the generated current to provide additional damping force to that of the primary amp and woofer voice coil. Without the subwoofer amp, there is too little damping force on the cone." (End Al's quote, and back to my thoughts..) I am assuming that the resistor allows the woofer to approach "critical dampening" without the external subwoofer amplifier.
Hope I didn't throw too much info at you.....too much coffee always makes me excitable. : )
Also, one may wish to consider bass traps if they're not being used presently. They've been reported to increase quality of the bass/midbass frequencies. ASC makes good traps and Jon Risch has some good DIY designs, for low $$. WAF is kinda low with most of these things though....
Best of luck,
Doug
FYI: I've been saving for new speakers (waiting 'till tax return time) but the 2 speakers I've had at the top of my list for the past 6-months are the two that you've mentioned...I'm leaning towards the Gallos for the time being.....
If you do try the resistor trick, I'd be interested to hear/read your thoughts /reactions.
Still can't figure out how to add 2-links,properly....help?
