Like any speaker, a powerful high current amplifier of decent quality is always best.
My old VR 2's made absolute magic with a JVC RX DP 9 receiver, and believe it or not made the VR 4JR's sing too.My big Moscode 600 was better of course on the VR 4JR's, and so was my Luxman M 117.
The point I am trying to make is I don't find the Von Schweikert
VR4 JR's as a speaker "having" to have a "magic" amp to sound decent. Some speakers are voiced deliberately thin in the 100 to 500 hz region, in the name of "transparency", LOL
These poorly designed speakers rely on either room boundary reinforcement OR a thick sounding Tube Amp to "flesh" them out!
None of the Von Schweikert speakers I have ever heard are voiced this way, meaning they will sound good with what you currently have, and only better as you move up the food chain.
The very best bass I got from my VR 4jr's was with a pair of used, inexpensive Ashly FET 500 Mosfet pro sound amps in bridged mode sitting right behind each speaker.
This was pure "overkill", and I went back to the big Moscode 600 because the image was bigger, and more 3D.
I had a friend who actually heard a new Moscode 401 at the show where George Kaye was using VR 4JR's, and he said it was a great sound.
So, as far as power goes, I would say any amp capable of 125 watts into an 8 ohm load should be enough for a VR 4JR in all but the very largest rooms.
The JVC RX DP 9 ran them in my large room with no problems, and I have never been known to be shy with the volume control ....
