Re: Audio Note Js: what is your opinion on MDF vs Birch ply cabinets?

Cables can make a difference - I will certainly admit that. I used to build my own for high speed analog / digital instrumentation work where everything had to be just right to get the data through uncorrupted. That was in a pretty severe environment with some high data rates.

What I think is true is that the science is well developed and if you understand that you can predict how a cable will sound from the physics. The problem is that nobody in audiophile land does the physics when they do a cable purchase. They just buy the thing and try to hear differences. They hear a difference, or think they hear a difference and then go around and around about how this proves the science is bad. Unfortunately that isn't sufficient.

If you are going to claim the science is wrong you have a lot of work to do - you need to measure the cables to determine if they should sound different or not, and then if you think they do sound different you have to come up with a protocol that can be repeated to establish the fact of the audible difference. Otherwise the scientists will lump that in with UFO sightings and clairvoyance.

Nobody has been able to do that yet so for now the best theory is that cables that measure the same sound the same. That is not the same as to say all cables should sound the same.
