I just ordered a couple Strawbs re-issues...can't wait to give them a spin when they arrive.Ah...my comment on your buddy was the suggestion that anyone who would build a record collection the way he did must be massively insecure - what else would explain someone trusting a magazine's opinion over their own ears? I still think that most people didn't/don't buy music this way. They may try a few recordings based on rave reviews but not a whole record collection. How does your bud collect other stuff??? It's just plain weird to like only what a certain set of critics have deemed worthy. I still maintain RS didn't wield as much power as you think - they influenced opinion along certtain narrow parameters but they didn't break bands. Honestly, I just think some bands were born to be obscure (including some I love sealry - Sparks, anyone?).
The seventies was really the only time I got to see the music biz up close and personal from a variety of insider perspectives - reviewer, photographer, editor, fan...knew people in bands, concert promotion, record companies radio and distribution. I even knew some famous groupies.
Life got too busy in the '80s to keep up and the pay sucked. Can't do it all. But it's nice to know some of us still remember the great music that was around then.
BTW, if anyone EVER hears of an import CD version of Stackridge's Extravaganza - EMAIL ME!
