DAT is correct, Rolling Stone was the king of the music magazines in the U.S. at the time, and they did trash Led Zeppelin, and it didn't matter. Other bands favorably written about in magazines like CREEM, however, couldn't sell peanuts.

The music RS championed the most was probably the laid-back California stuff--Jackson Browne, the Eagles, and Boz Scaggs. Didn't stop masses of people from buying that first Boston album. Which is not to say that RS didn't issue praise towards Boston, but it's a million miles from where their collective editorial mindset was when it came to music.

The argument you're putting forth makes sense on paper pretty much all the time, but in life, it's just not always valid.
