Of course, the numbers are slightly skewed if there were more consumers in 1976 (or whenever that came out) than there were in 1967, which I think is a safe bet. But that's more relevant when you compare numbers between today & decades ago, not to mention taking Soundscan into consideration.A less valid gray area would be indie label vs. major label.
Don't be too shocked if an American Idol classified as 'rock' outsells Boston in the near future, provided the program stays on the air. Certainly more people watch that show than buy 'rock' albums, especially ones that were released 30 years ago.
