Re: What's Going on with the Grateful Dead Releases?

12.216.40.137

I've read about the understandable (although unfortunate) downsizing as well as the plans to digitize the contents of the vault. What's troubling, for lack of a better word, is this sudden termination -- is it over? who knows? -- of the Download Series, the very thing that seemed to represent the logical extension of the 'digital vault' plans, and of the band's decision to prohibit soundboards on Archive.org. Wouldn't it be more sensible to continue the momentum of making more and more available for download purchase? Are people not willing to pay or what?

I'm a collector too, but I've made a point over the years of purchasing ALL official releases, even when I have a copy of the same show from alternate sources. I choose to pay for shows whenever possible because, in addition to the benefit of professional mastering/tinkering, I believe paying for the shows is the right and fair thing to do, especially now that the sale of these recordings is the only way to sustain the whole endeavor. Maybe too few people see things that way and it's already too late. Or perhaps, more hopefully, a new arrangement with Rhino brings a whole set of new resources that will improve and expedite the mastering-for-download process, or whatever they choose to do.

I'd like to know what's going on out of curiosity, to be sure, and also because it is highly enjoyable to have new releases to look forward to. One of the best things about the Download Series was the fun of wondering what show was coming out the first Tuesday of the month. I'm left with questions, and -- bottom line -- it seems to me that it would be better business to provide some information about when and where these recordings will be made available.
