The income gathered from touring helped to support the fairly huge Grateful dead operation, with that income largely gone there is only music sales as the primary source of income. This is the apparent reason for pulling the free downloads, with steps being taken to also eliminate or vastly reduce the GDP mail order operation as well. Imagine the cost alone of sending out god knows how many "Grateful dead Almanacs". There was significant downsizing after Garcia died, and this seems to be the last thing to go. The eventual goal is the contents of the vault vault will be digitized and available to buy downloads, and rhino will issue cd's as they already have been doing for awhile on the multi-track stuff. This info comes from a relix article and through the grapevine. As most collectors know a good lot of some of the best sounding Betty cantor stuff is not in the vault (Google Betty boards, go to nii.net and click on "initial WBOTB post" to get the full story). Also alot of stuff starting with 1980 to 1986 are soundboard cassettes. High quality audience tapes of these will usually sound better (for example 10/14/83). So for plenty of things outside the vault is the better or only source. Other things will have to wait for the restructuring.
