I wasn't for years, but then I became a convert. I was one of those people who preferred straight-up performances. Gimme the music as the composer wrote it, no "interpretation." I think the recording that did it for me was the Sibelius 2nd Symphony. Slow, slow, slow. But by the time it got to the third movement, I was entranced and then magic happened. Ever since then, I "get" Lenny. I don't love everything he recorded, but I love a lot of it. And I discovered that all music in performance is interpretation. Now, poker-faced performances like Haitink bore me to tears. Gimme some insight, gimme some personal perspective, gimme your soul laid out on that podium. Otherwise, why bother?Flame away!
