Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

I would have agreed with you a few years ago.....

Especially about his last M9. But for the 1979 Berliner Phil version which preceeded it is one of my favorites. Go figure, both from the same guy, and neither particularly traditional.

Actually I like the drama he could tack on - makes for some good alternative listening. Lots of fun. His broad tempi, especially in his later years was IMHO boring.

But, I bought some DG reissues of sets of his Schumann and Beethoven Symphonies and was very plesantly surprised by the life he breathed into these old warhorses. The were really quite the opposite of slow and dragged out and are amoung my favorite sets, especially the Schumann set.

So there you go - I recommend the Mahler 9 with the Berliner and the Schumann Set with the Wiener Phil.
