Re: Lenny and slow tempos....

While that may be true of many of his recordings from the later years, it's definitely NOT true of his Mahler 6th with the VPO on DG. The first movement in particular is quick and menacing--the perfect embodiment of "death marching in hobnail boots" (can't remember whose quote that is, but it's perfect in this instance).

The playing of the VPO, too, is amazing. The orchestra has never played "balls to the wall" quite like this before or since.

Even if you don't like Lenny that much, you owe it to yourself to hear this recording. Makes the recent M6 on Ondine with Eschenbach and the Philadelphia sound comatose by comparison.
