Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Re: Not an attack.

I'm well aware of the review (by Hentoff?) that called Trane's playing unmusical anti-jazz, and so is almost anyone who has seriously studied Coltrane's music. There was also a Danish critic who wondered in print if Coltrane's now legendary 1961 stint at the Village Vanguard was some sort of colossal practical joke. Neither one of them said Coltrane couldn't play the horn. I'm pretty sure by now that Hentoff has changed his mind, and I have no idea where the Dane is today. But does any of this matter? Name one musician at any point in history about whom there is unanimous agreement, even among well-informed listeners. There aren't any.

As for Mike K and his ridiculous rants against Miles and Coltrane, most of us have been down that road already and are beyond wasting more time. Who wants to try to reason with a guy who says "What did Coltrane ever write that will be remembered in 50 years" and then whines and moans when somebody (forcefully I admit, but so are the trolls) offers a list of examples that are nearly at the 50 year mark already and still being performed regularly? I wrote my own diatribe months ago and was foolish enough to believe it had shut this down for good. He hasn't posted any more of this junk since then until now.

And if you thing that somebody consumed with music pretty much 24/7 and obsessively pursuing self-improvement in that area to the point of neglecting one's own health doesn't qualify as "savant", I don't know what to say.
