Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Re: Check out

the thread below before you go getting the wrong idea. The most important point I'm trying to make is that our illustrious Bored member says that 'name-calling' is evidence of insecurity, yet he was the one who put up the post that said 'Talent Supreme, my ass.'

The much smaller point is that, contrary to the diatribe Rick unleashed on me before he saw that I was actually drawing on a work endorsed by no less than Nat Hentoff as coming from one of the dozen 'world's foremost jazz critics & scholars' or whatever the hell it was, I'm not a Coltrane detractor. On the other hand, I don't see the point in sainting him for his music, and I don't see why, as Rick suggested, it's a matter of 'ignorance' to dare suggest that Coltrane was anything but a virtuoso. I notice he chose to not direct that charge at Mike.

The one good thing about Mike's contributions on the topic is that we shouldn't be afraid to express our opinions. Mine is that if Coltrane were the virtuoso Rick's making him out to be, it wouldn't have been as prominent a sentiment as it was that while great, there very well may have been better players. I also think that there was a curve to Coltrane's development as a player that would be less dramatic in a virtuoso, as opposed to how I choose to view Coltrane--as a great talent, but as much if not more due to his drive, dedication, nonstop searching for inspiration, and insights into playing that my ears have always told me better players would never have thought of.

I realize this view makes me somehow a more fitting target for a pissing match than the guy who thinks Stan Getz wold've blown Coltrane off the bandstand, so attack, if ye must.
