Musicwise, the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries tower over the 20th century like colossuses. As much as I enjoy the music of the best composers of the 20th century, it did not produce a single one to compete with the likes of Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Tchaikowsky, Dvorak (don't tell me he's 20th century, he's 19th.) Not even one composer of their stature. Each of them created their own entire universe of music. And as for the 21st century, it would appear this art is all but dead. Perhaps there will be a revival, we're just at the beginning of it but the signs so far are not very good.
