Not sure what I can add here - this particular genre is not one that I have explored, for reasons similar to yours. The earlier artists in this field may be worth a shot; I seem to remember the Disposable Heroes of HipHoprisy having values more closely aligned with mine (and maybe yours, given what you have said) - good music too. Gill Scott Heron(?) maybe. To me, it seems like current "hip hop/ r&b" is like much of the fashion industry clothing: trend, fad, commodity, formulaic... The current model for increasing sales is to encourage people to buy, listen a couple of times, discard, buy another... and so on. This music is not meant to have longevity, is not meant to access those places of self that for me make music special. There is more I could say re marketing, psychology, social problems, and long-term viability associated with this approach (beyond the debasement of music) but I will end my stream of consciousness rant here.
A few musical suggestions. These artists use components of hip hop/r&b blah blah (I have a distaste for labels - but understand their necessity) and I find their music means something. Again, I am not well versed in this type of music, so take my suggestions at your peril:
Brooklyn Funk Essentials = Cool & Steady & Easy; a modern classic
Ute = Under the Eternal; deserves to be a classic (has a couple of ex-pat Aussies in the group)
DJ Vadim featuring Sarah Jones = Your Revolution; this great song is found on the La Mezzanine de l'Alcazar compilation
Ronny Jordan = The Quiet Revolution; contains the classic The Jackal. That's it from me.
Hope you find what you are looking for, Raymond.
