I wasn't aware that the 1250 had that much power. The Marantz 250 could be a good choice for the original poster, given how much you like yours. Is the restorer who did yours still active?

Edit: I agree with you regarding many early SS preamps I don't have the schematic of the 2238B receiver in front of me, so the following is speculation. Quite often the user can go from the "Tape Out" jacks, bypassing the preamp section, tone controls, etc, directly into a power amp.
