After reading what TK said about the sliders, which I never knew, along with the large number of other controls on the front panel of the 1250, that would be a deal breaker for me.

If your primary goal is to experiment with more power, there's another option you might consider. Your 2238B appears to have "pre out" jacks on the back. I'd be trying a modern SS or restored tube power amp out of those jacks long before I'd consider the 1250.
