Home Tube DIY Asylum

Do It Yourself (DIY) paradise for tube and SET project builders.

All was going well, and then...JJ destruction

I took the advice of trying out a passive volume control using the exact Radio Shack parts you suggested ( there are no other immediate options in these parts). I sat down for a listening comparison. I was noticing some differences when I decided to go back to the Adcom for another comparison. I powered the amp off, waited about 10 minutes and plugged the Adcom back in. I switched the amp on last, which is not unusual, and...

BVVVVVVVVVVVVVT!

For about a second, the JJ resembled an electrical storm in a bottle. It was pretty cool looking - almost worth the $15 I paid for it. Now I'm wondering - was it the JJ or me? It did blow the fuse but luckily it did not take anything with it. I've heard of JJ GZ34's doing this, but I thought that perhaps this had been worked out by now.

I plugged in the spare that I bought - a new Sovtek. Now there is a faint blue glow emitting from my SED EL34's (yes, they're winged c's) that I've never seen before. Is this an aftereffect of the JJ mishap, or is it something that the Sovtek is imparting on them?

I'd like to resume my listening tests, but I think I'm going to wait until one of you veterans gives me the green light. I don't want to screw my amp up any more. I'll go read some Jones in the meantime.
