No smearing in my experience and they are often paralleled in front ends to reduce noise through double gm and also in OP stages to reduce rp for other obvious benefits. However, the gains are generally not great in the application you describe so depending on circuit needs I prefer to use one triode as a current source for the other. Better, linearity, gain and more importantly, PSRR. In any case I would always make use of the second triode and better to parallel than to waste it and I often run parallel tubes where needed such as OP stages.Or, depending on gain requirements you could convert to a better sounding tube.
