I know I hate to have an unused triode in a tube fired up but left hanging. I believe that the 12AX7 is probably used as a voltage source in this implementation. You will get really no benefit by increasing its current capacity. Those kids back in the 50's were a pretty sharp bunch when they came up with these circuits. With the exception of transistor current loading, notice how little things have changed in the last 60 years.That being said, I have tried using 6SL7 in parallel and separate in a mu stage and I could not tell much of a difference. If you want to improve the circuit, ban the mini 9 pins IMHO. They were a miniturization and cost saving move, not an attempt to improve performance, again IMHO.
