I have built a couple variations of the RCA, both with octals and 9-pin tubes. Sounds really nice. However, I'd recommend this one instead:

I think it sounds loads better and does not have some of the limitations of the RCA circuit, plus it uses a shunt regulator which I highly recommend. For more of a challenge, and if you need more gain (like for a MC cartridge), I just finished Allen Wright's FVP phono stage. Wonderful sound! More difficult to build, and it uses a FET in the front end, but really great phono circuit.
