and compared them with something like a 300B, 45 or 2A3?I find the information interesting that nickel filaments may have a tungsten core wire, with a coating of nickel oxide, etc. but the difference in appearance is not subtle, so I wonder about this nit you pick.
Some of the old transmitter tubes that Eimac [and some crazy Russians] made produce a pretty stunningly clean sound when built into a good SET amp....Pretty much unlike anything you have heard in the tube world, and brings the 'tubey euphonic distorted' sound stereotype into serious question....their use of TT filaments being their fundamental commonality. :)
You get a small taste of that with the 211 or 845....even better with metal plates.
