The cube root thing comes from the Child Langmuir equation. Child Langmuir states that current is proportional to the 3/2 power of the effective plate to cathode voltage. That means the plate to cathode voltage varies as the 2/3 power of the current (by inversion).Since plate resistance is the rate of change of plate to cathode voltage with a change in current, it is the first derivative of the 2/3 power which is -1/3 or the inverse cube root. You may need to review differential calculus to see where that relationship comes from.
