Re: aa-32 mod...(not REAL long!)....2nd harmonic theory....

Dear BBECK,

Thank you very much; I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to talk to me about this.

I will have to chew on this for awhile. I'll reread your post and think about it carefully, do some googling, and try to respond with either understanding or at least an intelligent question.

Here's an interesting tidbit I picked up in studying how electron tubes are actually designed and fabricated: there are a whole bunch more electrons emmitted from the cathode (whether direct or indirectly heated) than are "needed", than ever get to the anode. Now, from you, I know that the ones who do get to the anode do so so quickly that harmonic distortion cannot be what I thought it was, a result of the space charge of succeeding waves pushing secondarily emmitted electrons back onto the plate. Hmmmph. It seemed like such a nice, understandable theory!! Now I'm back to square one.

So, the suppressor grid in a pentode is there primarily to keep secondarily emmitted electrons from getting to the screen grid, pushing them back onto the plate is the end result but not the raison d'etre. I must admit to feeling a little dumb right now, I had read that before but I completely forgot about that in the excitement of thinking about harmonic distortion and what could be the cause of it.

Best. Thanks. Later.
