Since you are mainly interested in playback of pre-existing tapes, I would suggest either a Nakamichi with azimuth adjustment or a Yamaha or NAD with play trim. Recordings made on different decks are notoriously inconsistent, and I Play Trim essential for addressing the high frequency loss that is very common when playing a tape made on a different deck. You can get a decent Yamaha with Play Trim for less than $100 on ebay. The Nak's with azimuth adjustment are much more expensive to buy and maintain. I would recommend a late 90's Yamaha 380, 390, 393, or 580. I have a 380 that sounds almost as good as my several Nakamichi's on most tapes recorded on the various machines I have owned over the years.
