Re: buying new and used cassette decks

This is tough question. Brand new decks are rare, quality decks at $200 even harder to find.

If you are lucky, you might find a liquidator selling new old stock at reasonable price.

The place to look are pro music shops, not audio retail outlets, they sometimes have DENON decks.

For used, perhaps you could split your budget to let say $140 for the used deck and $60 for service to bring it up to specs.

My vote would go to Nakamichi LX-5, sometimes it sells on ebay under $150. It has 3 heads, although you do not need it, the overal quality is higher than 2 head LX-3.

Onkyo Integra decks are also awesome (except reverse models) TA-2900, 2800, 2700 sound similar to Nak.

Also, buy or make decent patch cords, the ones we used in the 80s ( red and white plastic plugs) do not do justice to the quality of the decks.
