Actually, it's not as simple as that. Sometimes the labels let the original masters out, sometimes they don't. And the policy can change without notice. The bigger labels tend to swallow each other up periodically, and any time there's new staff in charge, they may have different requirements. But plenty of times we get to work with the original masters.

However, I don't expect this tape project to parallel the course of the Audiophile reissue labels exactly. It's unlikely that we'll be licensing the big hits of the major stars, for the simple reason that the dollars aren't big enough. Without getting into unnecessary levels of detail, licensing deals always involve a substantial up-front payment. FIM or MoFi or Classic can make it work because they expect to sell quantities in the thousands. How many units do you think we'll be selling? A hundred? Two hundred? Clearly we are going to have to come up with a different model.

But we are pretty sure we will be able to have some really good music to put out, for two reasons. One is that there is a whole world of great music that doesn't come out on the major labels. In my opinion, the majority of the interesting records that come out today are on independent labels, and in many cases the artist is in control of his/her own masters. We expect to be able to license some very interesting stuff that way. Two, as Dan suggested, we've got access to a great studio, and we are even now hatching a plot to record some great stuff just for this release format. Film at eleven.
