Having heard a state of the art turntable against a burmester cd player playing redbook cd through a system that cost a minimum of 500K I would say that it is possible for a redbook cd to sound at least as good as vinyl, much less tape. However, in my humble abode, which cost a hell of a lot less the 500k much less my stereo, cds just don't cut the mustard. Further, I have yet to hear a home duped cd that sounds as good as a home made tape of high quality. Caveat number 2: my brothe is busy dumping all his vinyl onto his hard-drive at 128bit resolution - a couple of terabytes of hard drive space by the by - and he claims, and I believe though I haven't visited lately, that it is far superior to tape. So digital may turn the corner yet. But for now, I'm sticking with the old magnetic stuff. As an added bonus, I understand how it works - fourier transforms are just a bit beyond me . . .
