Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

makes sense

"In other words, it's not about the impact of the PC on the incoming 110v AC or the noise level coming in through the IEC connector. It's about the impact of the PC on the overall system noise, driven by the PS current into the device."

I always suspected the PC fanatics obsessed about "noise" a little too much. I'm sure it's always there to some degree and may be a factor in some environments or with poorly designed gear.

Is it just me or is anyone else sick of reading the terms "airborne EMI/RFI" or "dirty AC lines" in practically every cable manufacturer's specs? If it was that simple one need only install a $5 filtered IEC connector in each component, and use the stock cord. People get these ideas in their heads, it spreads like a disease, and all of a sudden there's this great evil that requires a massive and expensive cord to filter out. Also by some miracle of science, once again there is a positive correlation between performance and cost of materials. Only the most expensive really works, and it doesn't matter what gear you have ;)

Maybe the component manufacturers should start advertising how well they designed their power supply so as to not require an aftermarket cord or power conditioner. Imagine a $2000 preamp that performs the same with the stock cord as with a $2000 cord... that's like a free preamp!

Take the Sonic Frontiers Line 3 for example. What an amazingly well-designed power supply this preamp has. I find that as long as the interconnects and power cords I use are well built, they all sound very good. In fact even vastly different designs (ranging from DIY DH Labs, to top-of-the-line Cardas, to high-end Transparent Audio) sound almost identical. I certainly have found absolutely no correlation between price and performance of cables, unless it is within a manufacturer's line (intentional colorations for marketing reasons no doubt).
