Piezo may be the wrong term

but there is definetely something happening when cables, especially shielded cables, are subjected to physical stress. Slap a microphone cord against a hard floor and you can hear it through the PA speakers. The same with an instrument cord and instrument amp. It may be a piezoelectric effect, or it may be related to an alteration in the capacitance in the cable as the insulation is compressed, but whatever you care to call it you can hear it, sounds like the cracking of a whip.
