I think your comments about "imaging" of stereophonic recordings is quite interesting and probably right on the money. For some reason, many if not most audiophiles place a great deal of importance on localizing musical instruments and voices and would probably take strong exception to what you say claiming their favorite speakers can produce imaging beyond imagining (pun intended.) And the well known "hole in the middle effect" as it was once called is still a clear and present danger. As for me, I could hardly care less about it. I don't really care if the french horn player sat two feet to the left of the oboe player or five feet. For all I know the next night they switched seats. For me hearing recordings of musical instruments reproduced with the same tone as real instruments and clearly enough to distinguish them from each other when they are playing together is the best I can expect out of a loudspeaker system. And apparantly for most of them, that is more than they can reasonably expect to deliver.
