Re: Rear-firing tweeters : gimmick or real improvement ?

Hi Lambda,

Like most everything else in audio, if using the rear-firing tweeters is done correctly & judiciously it can be a nice improvement in how well your speakers will replicate live music. I think Unsoundmind's comment of: "When the treble is right, anything is possible. When it's wrong, nothing else seems to matter, the speaker's overall sound will always appear dull or shrill and always like it emerges from a box." is very incorrect. Although the treble, like the bass, certainly plays it's part in the overall presentation, it's the all-important midrange that contains the vast majority of the music and thus plays the largest role in the illusion of replicating live music. So in reality it's when the midrange is right, that anything is possible. When the midrange is wrong, nothing else seems to matter!

If you doubt what I'm saying go to any 3-way speaker. Disconnect all 3 drivers and then play a song with just:

a) the tweeter attached
b) the midrange attached
c) the woofer attached

After listening you tell me which area, treble/tweeter, midrange/sqawker or bass/woofer fit's the description of: When the (treble, midrange or bass) is right, anything is possible. When it's wrong, nothing else seems to matter.

Good luck with your experiments using rear-firing tweeters. Von Schweikert has been using this approach for years. Part of their description about their speakers states: This crossover design and driver radiation pattern allows the speaker to radiate a "bubble" of sound instead of a narrow beam, allowing 3-D imaging over a very wide space. No more trading chairs for the "sweet spot!" Combined with our rear-firing Ambience Driver for spatial depth, the VR speakers reproduce sound that is incredibly real! Hopefully yours will as well!

Keep enjoying the music -- Thetubeguy1954
