More About Roger Russell's New Speakers.

To Anyone Who's Interested.

I noticed some felt that for Roger to use Cardas wire and yet make the claim on his website that's quoted below, was somehow a mark apon his integrity. Knowing Roger to be a man of integrity I sent him the email below:
=============================================
Roger, I noticed with your new IDS speakers you are using Cardas wire internally. Yet everytime we talked and on your website you said: "When confronted with the truth, believers do not want to hear about it. They want to remain in the magical world of fantasy where they think they can hear improvements in their wire, often arrived at by making listening tests without adequate controls or understanding of the problems involved." I don't understand how you can believe that and then use Cardas wire in your speakers! Please explain this paradox for me.

Here's Roger's response: Hi Tom: Sorry for the confusion. The explanation is the same as what we found at McIntosh for the shows. We used to use plain wire for the speakers and visitors would spend their time criticizing this instead of looking at the equipment. We changed to expensive wire and then visitors paid attention to the equipment.

Cardas wire does not sound any better but it may help to sell speakers for those who are concerned about wire and are not convinced that ordinary wire is just as good.. The increase in our cost is negligible compared to the drivers, enclosures and equalizer.

Personally I (thetubeguy1954) don't understand how doing that is seen as a mark apon Roger's integrity. Instead I see it as a sound business move! Using Cardas wire internally allows Roger to make his speakers appealing to both types of music lovers:

1) If you don't believe wires influence the sound. then the use Cardas wires will cause a slight increase in the cost of a $19K speaker which is negligible compared to the drivers, enclosures and equalizer so it shouldn't matter to anyone in the "wires sound the same group" who'd spend $19K on a speaker.

2) If you do believe wires influence the sound, then you'll certainly notice that Cardas wires were used internally. This would be an important selling feature to the "wires don't sound the same group." Adding it caused a negligible cost increase, while making his speaker more attractive to a group of music lovers that demand "high-quality" wires be used in a $19K speaker.

This seems like a sound business move nothing more and nothing less! Roger doesn't believe using Cardas wire causes the speaker to "sound" any better but he knows it may help to sell speakers to those who are concerned about the type of wire used. Can't blame a guy for wanting his business to prosper, instead of intionally alienating a group of music lovers just to prove that he personally believes wires don't influence the sound...
